When a business says it is carbon neutral , it aims to effectively add no carbon to the atmosphere. Until now, most companies have focused on offsetting emissions to achieve neutrality. This often involves funding projects in developing economies to reduce carbon emissions there, for example building hydroelectric power plants, encouraging families to stop using wood-based stoves, and helping businesses make use of solar power.

These reductions are then deducted from the main company's own output. The result of this slows carbon emissions rather than reversing them. To be carbon negative a company must actually remove more carbon from the atmosphere than it emits. Microsoft has said it will do this using a range of carbon capture and storage technologies. Amazon's Jeff Bezos promises climate-change action.

Apple prioritizes energy reduction at its corporate and supplier facilities. The company has programmes to identify energy efficiency measures at Apple facilities and in its supply chain. These programmes have prevented over , tonnes of CO2e from entering the atmosphere.

By sourcing recycled or renewable materials, Apple has been able to further decrease its carbon emissions. To do this, Apple has sourced aluminum from hydro-powered smelters, improving the material efficiency of manufacturing processes and increasing the recycled content in its products.

These mangroves not only protect the coasts and help support the livelihood of the communities where they grow, but they can also store up to 10 times more carbon than forests on land. This project with Conservation International is the first to fully value the entire ecosystem — including trees and soil — for its climate mitigation value.

And research from our Material Recovery Lab in Texas helps us reclaim more of those building blocks with innovative tools and technologies. Daisy and Dave, our disassembly robots, take apart iPhone devices and components to recover crucial materials like gold, cobalt, steel, and tungsten. These collected materials make it back to the raw materials marketplace so that we, and others, can use recycled materials for the next generation of products. Since our Power for Impact program has funded projects with clear carbon, ecological, and social benefits, giving local communities and organizations access to cost-effective energy while we retain the environmental attributes of each project.

Solar projects in the Philippines, Thailand, Nigeria, Vietnam, Colombia, Israel, and South Africa help provide cost-effective energy to communities facing energy challenges. Recently Apple brought renewable energy to over South African households that previously lacked access. We are also helping to reduce electricity costs for the Pioneer School for the Visually Impaired by funding rooftop solar panel installations at three schools across South Africa.

And in October we announced a partnership with the Oceti Sakowin Power Authority, a megawatt clean energy project put forward by six Sioux tribes in the Dakotas, to develop tribal renewable energy resources for the wholesale market. This project will support a large-scale wind power development in the Midwest. We consider our impact on people and the planet in everything we do. And we continue to ask ourselves how we can make our work an even greater force for good in the world.
